PNP Provincial Director PCol. Julian Entoma said Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte had already mentioned in his televised address to the nation on April 16 that the campaign against illegal gambling will be strictly enforced as there is a possibility that the recipients of the fund may use it for gambling.
“Another nakong directive sa atong kapulisan ron ang atong pahimangno sa Presidente ang (illegal) gambling hingusgan tungod kay nahatag na ang SAP sa mga kabarangayan then mao ning himuon unya pang-capital sa gambling. In the absence pa sa memorandum coming from our regional headquarters, ako na daan gi-disseminate sa atong kapulisan sa dakop sa gambling. (My directive to law enforcement officers is related to President Duterte’s reminder to enhance the campaign against illegal gambling. Since SAP is distributed in every barangay, people may use this as capital for gambling. Even though there is still no memorandum coming from our regional headquarters regarding this, I have already directed the entire police force to intensify their arrest for people involved in illegal gambling),” Entoma said.
SAP is a form of cash subsidy given by the national government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to the “poorest of the poor” families whose livelihood were greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The provincial police chief also warned barangay officials who will tolerate this kind of activity in their village.

“Kung dunay barangay official within 50 meters sa maong activity, wala sila kabadlong o wala man sila makatawag sa pulis na naa dihay gagambling, ato silang iapil ug pasaka ug sumbong. Mao ang akong directive sa kapulisan na ato nang pabug-atan (If there is barangay official within 50 meters from gambling venue and the official just tolerated it or didn’t contact the police to stop the activity, then the official will be also be included in the complaint. This is my directive to the police and we will be strong in enforcing it),” Entoma added.
He said barangay officials who fail to take action on this will be recommended for suspension from work.
Meanwhile, Entoma stressed that the provincial police will continue to arrest violators of the rules imposed under the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) throughout the province, citing his appeal to the public to stay at home to ensure their safety and avoid detention for defying the ECQ.

I am reminding the public to stay at home and avoid any gambling activity so you will not be arrested),' he said.
From April 3 to April 16, PNP has arrested around 147 individuals across the province for violating the ECQ. (ral/PIA7-Negros Oriental)
