Paddle-style riverboats have been plying the rivers of the mighty Mississippi since the 1800s, when they were pared-down cargo vessels meant only to move livestock and produce quickly up and down the river. With the advent of the railroad, the steamboats were replaced as workhorses. Quick-thinking boat owners gussied them up to cater to well-heeled passengers, giving birth to the opulently decorated white-and-red vessels that now leisurely trawl the waters. Today, these luxurious riverboats -- a couple of which dock in the Memphis area -- offer a uniquely Southern dinner experience.

Memphis Riverboats

The only operator based in the city itself, Memphis Riverboats takes guests on a two-hour-long tour of the river, showing off the twinkling Memphis city lights to the bouncing, deep-Southern soundtrack of a live jazz band. The buffet-style barbecue dinner offerings include pulled pork, grilled chicken, home-style baked beans, coleslaw, buttered corn and dessert. The buffet is a one-trip affair, not an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord, so stack your plate high if you're hungry. As dinner is winding down, the house band sets up on deck. The friendly foursome play a little bit of everything, but they specialize in R&B, jazz and -- of course -- a hefty dose of the blues. The band plays requests and cheerfully encourages the crowd to dance.

New

Similar in format and style to the Memphis Riverboats cruise, the Tunica Queen begins trips at the dock in the Tunica Casino Resorts area, 20 miles south of Memphis. The typically Southern dinner menu includes prime rib, red beans and rice, roast turkey, salad, steamed vegetables and potatoes. Live music and dancing begins after dinner. The boat's outside decks may not afford views of the Memphis skyline, but the sunset, moon and stars are very much in evidence.

Drinks

For a truly Southern experience, cool off after dancing with a sweet iced tea, which both cruises serve free of charge. Coffee, too, is included with both operators' ticket price. However, all other drinks -- including soda, beer and liquor -- incur an extra charge and can be bought at both boats' full cash or credit bars.

Seasons

Both dinner cruises are seasonal, weekends-only operations. From March 1 through April 30, Memphis Riverboats schedules dinner cruises only on Saturday nights. In the summer season, from May 1 through Aug. 31, departures are scheduled on both Fridays and Saturdays. Sept. 1 through Oct. 31, cruises are again Saturdays only. The Tunica Queen starts offering dinner cruises in March, on Saturdays only. From April through October, dinner cruises depart on both Friday and Saturday evenings. In November, the schedule narrows back to Saturdays.
